How we help

We bring your calming sensory room to life from initial concept to final installation. You don’t need to lift a finger.

Supporting sensory processing

All day long, your brain receives information from your senses about the world around you. It’s constantly assessing and integrating new information. This is known as sensory processing.

Through this self-organisation of sensory input, we’re able to regulate our emotions and behaviours.

But it’s not always easy. Because we live in a busy, noisy world, our senses are constantly bombarded by lights, sounds and smells. Stress, anxiety and other conditions can mean both neurodivergent and neurotypical people may begin to struggle with a sense of overload.

When the brain is overwhelmed by too much sensory input, it goes into ‘fight, flight or freeze’ mode, its natural response to a perceived threat.

Every week I get new people calling up saying I’ve heard about the sensory room or my friend’s child is going there and I’ve seen a huge improvement in their behaviour…

Symptoms of Sensory Overload

These symptoms may include:

  • Anxiety
  • Over-excitement
  • Fear or panic
  • Meltdowns or tantrums
  • Irritability
  • Restlessness
  • Physical discomfort
  • Covering the eyes or ears to block out sensory input
  • A strong desire to leave.

As you can imagine, feeling like that can have quite an impact on daily life, interfering with work or schooling and causing additional stress in the home.

That’s why you need a room to reset.

Entering the calming sensory room

The calming sensory room is an immersive experience in a purposefully designed multisensory environment that engages the senses in a positive way.

That supports sensory modulation – the way your brain organises and regulates sensory input in order to respond well to the environment.

Being in there feels rejuvenating, invigorating, emotionally nourishing – a little bit magical, even.

Explaining the room

“It’s like going to a different world”

A holistic sensory experience

Research participants have likened the sensory room to a shield, a sanctuary or a hug. It’s a purposefully designed space that gently soothes and stimulates your senses.

Floral aromas

Combining these elements creates a feeling of being cocooned in a safe space where the pressures of the outside world cannot intrude.

The darkness creates an immediate, soothing contrast to the glare outside. As your eyes adjust, they find rest in the dark spaces while the soft, vivid colours focus your attention.

The gentle music, the pleasant aromas, the comfy seating areas and the slowly changing illuminations all help to slow down your thoughts, breathing and heart rate.

You’re already much more relaxed. That’s aided by the weighted blankets and seatings that stimulate proprioception, your body’s sense of where you are.

And now, you do nothing.

The room’s doing all the work. Everything is here and my mind can just interact with the room and I just sit back.

You’re not here to develop skills, solve a problem or tick another thing off your list. In the sensory room, you are here to be, not to do. Just breathe slowly in and out and enjoy the experience.

That, in itself, makes the sensory room radically different from the outside world where you’re trying to meet expectations and manage situations. Right now, you’re in a haven where nobody needs anything from you. This is self-care at its best and easiest.
